I agree that this was a bad choice. I also wish this film had handled Oppenheimer's relationship with Jean a bit differently. We spend so much time with her and see them together quite a bit, but I struggled to really grasp her importance in his life. I wanted a bit more from that relationship than just the clear ties to Communism. (But maybe that's just me.)
